What to Expect When You Bring Your Vehicle in for an MOT Test

If your car, van, or motorbike is due its annual check, knowing what actually happens during MOT testing can take a lot of the stress out of the day. What is an MOT test?

An MOT is a legal requirement for most vehicles over three years old in the UK. It’s an annual inspection, set out by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency), that checks your vehicle meets minimum road safety and environmental standards. It isn’t a full service or a guarantee the car will run trouble-free for the next year — it’s a snapshot of whether the vehicle is roadworthy on the day of the test.

Booking your MOT

You can book your MOT up to a month (minus a day) before your current certificate expires without losing any time on the new one. We’d always recommend booking ahead rather than waiting until the last minute, especially during busy periods, whether you’re coming to us from Melrose, Kelso, or further out across the Borders. What happens during the test

A DVSA-qualified tester will work through a set list of checks covering the vehicle from bumper to bumper. This typically includes:

• Lights and signals – headlights, indicators, brake lights, hazards and number plate lights all have to work correctly and be aimed properly.

• Steering and suspension – checked for excessive wear, play, or damage.

• Brakes – tested for efficiency, condition and balance, including the handbrake.

• Tyres and wheels – tread depth, condition, and correct size and type for the vehicle.

• Seatbelts and seats – condition, operation, and secure mounting.

• Bodywork and structure – checked for sharp edges, corrosion, or damage that could be a safety risk.

• Exhaust and emissions – making sure the vehicle isn’t producing excessive or illegal levels of emissions.

• Windscreen, wipers and washers – checked for chips, cracks, and proper function.

• Horn – simple, but it has to work.

• Registration plates and VIN – confirmed as legible and correctly displayed.

Most MOTs take around 45 minutes to an hour, though this can vary depending on the vehicle.

Pass, fail, or advisory.

Once the test is complete, there are three possible outcomes:

• Pass – you’ll get a new MOT certificate and you’re good to go for another year.

• Pass with advisories – the vehicle passes, but the tester has flagged something worth keeping an eye on, like tyres nearing the legal limit or slight corrosion. These aren’t legal requirements to fix immediately, but it’s worth addressing them before they become a bigger (and more expensive) problem.

• Fail – the vehicle has one or more faults that don’t meet the required standard. You’ll be given a detailed list of what needs attention. If your current MOT hasn’t expired yet, you can still drive the vehicle, but if it has expired, you’re legally restricted to driving to a pre-booked repair or retest.
